Welcome
On behalf of the Board of Examiners, I would like to welcome you to this section of the Institute of Law’s website, designed to assist law students in preparing for the qualifying examinations.
This section of the site contains: legislation covering the structure of examinations; and the syllabus. Please e-mail any suggestions that you have to the Bailiff’s Judicial Secretary.
Finally, on behalf of the Board, I would like to congratulate all those students who were successful in the most recent examinations and wish luck to all those intending to qualify at the next sitting (details of which are also given below).

How to enrol
To enrol for the exams, please apply to the Deputy Bailiff’s secretary in writing (R.Traisnel@courts.je). For the first time you sit any examinations, you will need to submit:
- A letter of application addressed to the Deputy Bailiff, President of the Board of Examiners, outlining which exams will be taken in that first examination session. You will need to include your home address (used for all correspondence), personal contact information (either email or mobile) and also within that letter confirm you are registered with the Institute of Law.
- Copies of relevant qualifications that permit you to sit the qualifying examinations, all copies to be certified as a true copy by a Jersey advocate/solicitor.
- Photographic ID to be provided and certified as a true copy by a Jersey advocate/solicitor.
Once the deadline has passed for applications, and if the Deputy Bailiff has approved your application, you will receive your allocated candidate number. For subsequent examination sessions, you need only write with your candidate number to apply to sit particular examinations.

The Board of Examiners consists of experienced advocates and solicitors and visiting professors who teach the Jersey Law Course.
Each examination is a 3-hour written paper. The pass mark is 60 per cent.
