Archer de Gruchy
I’ve never wanted to leave the island so being able to stay on the island whilst studying towards a LLB through the University of London is ideal for me.
The institute has very small class sizes compared to the even the small Universities in the UK where you are just a face in a crowded hall, being at the Institute it in such a tight knit community has been beneficial to my learning.
The teaching is all paced out towards the afternoons and evenings which is good as it has allowed me to work part time and to do a placement at a local firm.
The institute has a mentoring scheme where you are partnered with local lawyers and those involved in the law, this gives you a valuable insight into the inner workings of the law and how it is applied practically in the real world.
Since being at the Institute I’ve been able to get involved with my fellow students with setting up our own law society a branch of the European Law Students Association where I was able to compete in a moot court against people from all over Europe, take part in a meeting with other law students from the UK in Newcastle, visit the Magistrates Court, Royal Court and States Assembly where we got to meet the Deputy Bailiff.
Being at the institute has given me so many opportunities which I would never have if I had gone off island and I am very happy with my choice to stay on island and study with at the institute.
